Why Couples Massage Works

Couples massage is hot. Thousands are realizing the direct, and indirect benefits of this unique massage offering. In a couple’s massage, two people are massaged in the same room, at the same time, by two different therapists. It can be a husband and wife, girlfriend and boyfriend, same-sex partners, moms and daughters or best friends. Why is couple’s massage different and why does it work?

What Happens During Couples Massage?

Couples massage is a massage that takes place in a room large enough for two massage tables. What you get in a couples massage varies greatly based on the location and focus of the therapists you select.  In a spa, couple’s massage typically includes access to showers, hot tubs, lounging areas and more.  In a therapeutic setting, like SVMTG, the focus is on the bodywork, so while the amenities might be less extravagant, the therapists are typically better trained.  In a therapeutic couple’s massage, each therapist has an individual conversation with the massage guest to determine his or her goals for the session.  At SVMTG, it’s common for one massage guest to want a focus on relaxation, and the other on tending to aches and pains from athletic activities, for example.

After an initial consultation to review your session goals and answer any questions you may have, the therapist will leave the room for a shot time while you and your massage partner disrobe to your comfort level and slip under the sheets on the massage tables. During the entire session, the therapist modestly undrapes only the body parts they’re working on.

Once the session begins, you may choose to zone out and be quiet the whole time.  It’s also fine to talk to each other, or to your therapist. Your therapist will check in with each of to ensure you are comfortable several times during the session.

Both massages will end at the same pre-appointed time and the therapists will signal the end of the session, then leave the room.  You’ll (carefully) get up and re-dress and open the door to let the therapists know you’re ready.  The therapists will greet you with fresh water and check in to make sure your session goals were met, and to answer any questions, then guide you to reception so you can pay for the services.  Tipping is customary, usually 20% of the value of the service.

What Are the Benefits of Couples Massage?

Couples massage is a great way to introduce a partner who has never gotten a massage before in a way that makes them feel more comfortable the first time. Some people are apprehensive about getting a massage and to have their a partner, spouse or friend there is reassuring.

Many first timers, especially men, discover what many women already know–that therapeutic touch is very relaxing and restorative. Once they experience a couples massage, they are much more willing to book a massage on their own.

Couples massage also offers a rare opportunity for you do something together where you’ll both leave feel relaxed and rejuvenated. The shared experience will be both memorable and enjoyable.

How Much Does Couples Massage Cost?

The price of couples massage can vary widely depending on what type of business or location you choose for the massage. Expect to pay more for a spa setting – up to $400 in higher-end super-spas.  Full body therapeutic couple’s massage sessions from a small business owner is generally just twice the price of a single guest session regular massage – placing the total in the more affordable $140-$200 range. Many businesses also offer Groupon discounts, too. Tipping is extra.
